Traditional Irish Event
It is through their participation in this event that the real Ireland, its people and their traditions are fully appreciated. Our crafts people have been carefully chosen and they take great pride in demonstrating their skills and encouraging our guests to participate. The range of crafts vary from traditional food preparation to farm and village crafts. A treasure chest of memories will be taken home to be shared after this truly authentic experience.
STONE WALL BUILDING
The countryside of Ireland is characterised by the stone walls that have been built through the centuries by farmers to divide their pastures and protect their livestock. Our guests join with the stone mason in building a section of wall and leaving their very own imprint on the landscape.
STRAW ROPE MAKING
At this event the guests learn the skill of making a rope out of straw in the true farm tradition. In the past these ropes were used for a wide range of practical purposes on the farm.
VISIT TO THE BAILEYS LADIES
The Hayden family has worked this beautiful farm for over 140 years and is now home to their magnificent herd of 110 cows who produce milk for Baileys Irish Cream. No visit to The Orchard Centre is complete without getting up close and personal with these wonderful creatures.
VISIT TO ST PATRICK'S WELL
Over 1500 years ago St Patrick blessed the well that is located just 500 metres from The Orchard Centre. Now a famous heritage site it attracts people from near and far hoping for good luck after drinking its fresh waters.
The village basket maker was a very busy person as their products were used for a wide range of everyday tasks. The different basket types as well as different styles are presented to our guests.
The turf fire was not only the traditional fuel but it gave the bread its own unique flavour. Our guest can join in and learn the secret recipe and then taste the freshly baked bread for themselves.
Traditional butter making involved separating the cream from the fresh milk and then using a hand worked churn the butter was made. Lots of help is needed at this event and before you leave you must try the new butter on the fresh bread.
SHEEP DOG TRIALS
The spectacle of the dog as he tests his skills in trying to round up natures most difficult creatures is a sight to behold. The demonstration of the relationship between the dog and his owner is truly amazing as training and discipline win out the day.
